What is a Right To Buy?

Right to Buy allows most council tenants to buy their home at a discounted price, up to 70% or a maximum of £127,940 if based in London or £96,010 elsewhere.

Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland have a different set of rules. Visit your local council for more details.

Right To Buy

What is the maximum discount I could qualify for?

Once qualified, you'll receive up to a 70% discount on the market value of your home. If you've been a public tenant for between 3-5 years only, a 35% discount applies (house). Every year a further 1% discount will be added. If your home is flat, then 50% discount applies, plus 2% increment each year.

Can I buy my home with my partner?

Yes, or some that shares your tenancy or up to 3 family members who have been living with you in the last 12 months, and if they don't share your tenancy​.

My home used to belong to the council, and is now owned by a housing association, can I still buy my home?

Yes, you may have the right to buy your home, under the Preserved Right to Buy. Please check with your landlord first.

How to apply for the Right To Buy?

You can start applying right away, click here, then hand it over to your landlord and wait for the response of your offer. If they don't want to sell, they have to give a valid reason.

Will I need a deposit to buy my home?

No. The discount that you receive of 35% should be sufficient, your mortgage broker should explain what are your options.
